Orlando Figes: Writing History

Fewer people in this world than a handful of historians have been able to make their mark as widely and strongly as the renowned historian Orlando Figes. His prowess doesn’t only lie in the writing of history but also in the art of writing in general. Figes is one of the three people in his family who are renowned for their writing skills after his mother, Eva and sister, Kate, who are both renowned authors in non fiction based fields. Coming back to the life of Figes, he is renowned in specific terms for his understanding and rendition of Russian history in his pieces of work. He based much of his work on the facts of Russian history related to the time of the Russian Civil War, a topic he has been in love with since he wrote his dissertation paper on the peasants of Volga during the period of the Civil War.

As far as his education is concerned, Orlando Figes completed his primary education at William Ellis School which is based in North London where he came under the influence of future historians Toby Abse and Mark Mazower. Here onwards Cambridge was to be his next destination as Gonville and Caius College began his tryst with History as a pure subject. Hereafter a Ph.D. was the obvious choice for a man who was obsessed with history in a good way. A string of books on Russian history followed which not only won him several accolades and good critical reviews in the entire circuit but also ensured that his stock as a credible historian rose a whole lot. He was taken up as a research fellow at the most esteemed Trinity College hereafter. He also began to teach his subject at Cambridge. Apart from this he was also given a Chair of History at London University.

Educational Institutions used Multimedia Programs

It was in the early 1980s that cable and satellite television became the primary media for distance education courses. Over time, the computer industry grew; and educational institutions used multimedia programs, the PowerPoint being the most popular one, in order to enhance teaching techniques in the hopes that students can easily absorb lessons.

In mid-1990s, the Internet happened, and online education started to become a part of everyone’s way of life. At first, e-training companies only rendered online training courses for business entities that did not prefer in-house trainers for their employees. However, as the technology advanced, online classes and college courses ultimately became the next big thing. And up to now, we continue to witness the evolution of distance learning and online education, the changes of which have resulted to a lot of benefits.

What basically sets online education apart from traditional face-to-face education is the technological separation of teachers and students. Online education saves students from the burden of actually going to a certain place at a certain time to meet his professor in order to learn. The two-way Internet-based communication systems that comprise a great streaming media, online video access, and fast web servers allow students to learn at home or someplace else at their own time. This enables students to keep on earning their respective university degrees through ways they see more efficient and effective. If they wish to study while working, then taking college courses online could be their best option.

However, every option has its pros and cons and perhaps the major downside of online education is the lack of interaction that is naturally present in traditional classes. Online courses may be flexible for one’s study and work schedules, but it may also limit social skills that contribute into making a well-rounded individual. That is why online education must be balanced with a good amount of interaction as learners do tasks aside from studying.

Homeschooling Families

Spelling can be a real challenge. It seems that students are either very good or very poor spellers. Those students who have good spelling skills can learn with any curriculum and methods. However, as you may know, if a student struggles with spelling, finding a curriculum or method of teaching spelling is very difficult. One solution is to use a multi-sensory spelling curriculum. If you have only one student, a spelling program that fits that child’s learning style will work. However, many homeschooling families have more than one child. Using a multi-sensory program will fit every child. The kinds of activities that people use to learn spelling words include: saying each letter and each syllable, tracing on or in a rough surface (sand, on a rug, sand paper etc.) or in the air with big motions, writing a number of times, and spelling it out loud. Visual learners can draw a line around the word to see the shape of the word. Another component to a good spelling program is the “Test, Study, Retest” approach. In many programs, students are given a list of 20 words. Good spellers already know most of them and those who struggle can not possibly learn them all. With the Test, Study, Retest method, you test the student to find a few words that he needs to learn. Then the student studies using all of the senses and then takes the test again. Continue on ones that are missed and go on to new ones a few at a time. A spelling program should provide frequent review and use words that the students will actually use. You can adapt many spelling curriculums to these methods, however, I highly recommend Spelling Power.

One word of caution: If your child does not seem to respond to a multi-sensory program, choose one of the components of the program and see if that is more effective. One time, our foster son, who I will call John, was getting bogged down with spelling using Spelling Power. For several weeks, John enjoyed spelling his words into a tape recorder. For John, at that time, the 10 steps were too many. He succeeded at learning his words with just that one activity – which seemed like a game to him. In children like John, they may become overwhelmed with too much sensory input.

Another way to find out if your child has learned the information is to reverse roles. Have your child be the teacher, teaching you the math concept. This will allow you to test how well he understands and reinforces correct understanding. Children love to be the teacher or to have a secretary. This allows you to test and reinforce in a game format. You definitely do not have to use a standard paper and pencil test to find the information you need.
